Hiking Black Tusk, Panorama Ridge, and Garibaldi Lake in the same day

Is Black Tusk, Panorama, and Garibaldi Lake doable in a day?

Yes, you can do Black Tusk, Panorama Ridge, and Garibaldi Lake on the same day! I am not a climber, nor a runner, and I did all three trails as a day hike. While it was a long day and tough on my feet, physically I was feeling very well throughout the hike. Connect with me for more hikes as I roll out the blogs slowly!

The time is 13 hours. I started around 9 a.m. from  the trail head (map) and got down a little after dark in the peak summer season.

tusk.jpegWhat is the distance hiking Black Tusk, Panorama Ridge, and Garibaldi Lake?

I didn't track distance myself. Black Tusk is 29km + 10km detour to Panorama ridge(5 each way) + 2km detour to Garibaldi Lake = approximately 41km (others say it's about 37km, probably without detour to Garibaldi Lake).

If I were to do it again, I'd do Garibaldi Lake first, since the color of the water is much brighter under direct sunlight.

Since this is a fairly long hike with exposure, my back got eroded without a top from the strap of my backpack. I would go with a light backpack with comfortable strap and a tan top to protect my skin.

Yes, you'd get a permit for the hike at https://reserve.bcparks.ca/dayuse/registration

How was it hiking Black Tusk?hiking pole.jpeg

To the base of the Chimney(summit point), the ascend is relatively gradual.

The toughest part is the first wall going up the summit. It feels like beginner-level rock climbing(I've tried rock climbing indoors once). With my body pretty close to the wall, and nudging the rocks to make sure it's not loose before making a move, I find it pretty easy. If you are afraid of heights, however, I would not recommend this hike.

How difficult is Black Tusk?

Technically speaking, it's a class three scramble that requires handholds for upward movement on steep and rocky terrain.

Some comparable hikes in B.C. are:

Cypress Peak, Tricouni, Weart, Brunswick, Crown, Mariott.

In comparison to Panorama Ridge, it has more exposure and looks more precarious for those with a fear of heights.

Do I need a helmet hiking Black Tusk?

Yes, I recommend it. The rocks are loose on the last ascend to the summit. I also recommend a light waterproof/windproof windbreaker in case of light sprinkles and windy conditions at the top. I am wearing the beta Ateryx AR that I bought from my Iceland trip. Hiking sticks were also useful on the way to the Chimney. Ditch your hiking poles for the scramble section so you have free hands.

Here are the best helmets for climbing with expedited shipping for your next adventure.

Black tusk is 29km. It takes approximately 9 hours to do it alone.

How long does it take to hike Panorama Ridge alone?ridge.jpeg

Panorama Ridge is 30km. It takes approximately 9 hours to do it alone.

How did it feel doing Black Tusk, Panorama Ridge, and Garibaldi Lake in one day?

The first 6 hours were pretty flat, with ascending Black Tusk and Panorama being more taxing. The toughest part was the last hour going down since I was pretty tired psychologically and my toes were hurting quite a bit.

If you have sensitive toes like me, I found toe protectors and marino wool socks pretty useful for hiking. When going downhills try using your hill edge more to ease the pressure from you toes.

Conclusion

Since Black Tusk and Panorama Ridge share a common section, I found it most convenient to do it on the same day. I did not decide to hike them both until after I finished Black Tusk. As always, know your limits, and do what your heart telling you is safe.

Are you hiking Panorama Ridge soon? Let me know of any questions!
